About the event
Carving a spoon from green wood is a very satisfying using just and axe and a knife to craft a beautiful object that you can use for years.
During this course you will learn wood selection, understanding wood grain, tool selection, safe use of the tools and designing your own spoon.
You will start the day by looking at a variety of safe cutting techniques using the axe and knife. You will then move on to wood selection, and what to look for in green wood and what to avoid.
From there you’ll move onto using a carving axe, spoon design, using a knife safely and efficiently as well as using a curved spoon knife.
During your day with us, you will learn about:
- The properties of different green woods
- Wood selection for your project
- Splitting techniques
- Correct and safe use of an axe for carving
- Various cutting techniques used during spoon carving
- Maintenance and sharpening methods for your tools
The course is perfect for novices and those taking their first steps in spoon carving. You’ll get a good grounding in carving with an axe and knife practice and theory.
All tools and materials for the day will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own tools to use during the day if you wish.
